The Global Forum on Competition takes places from 7th December to 8th December 2017 at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) Conference Centre in Paris, France. The forum is organised by the OECD and offers a platform for the world competition practitioners and academics to meet and discuss a wide variety of competition-related topics. The Competition Council of Latvia (the CC) is represented by the chairwoman Skaidrīte Ābrama.
The 16th edition of the Global Forum brings together high-level competition officials from over 140 authorities and organisations worldwide to debate a wide range of key and emerging competition issues including the link between competition policy and other cornerstones of economic development.
This year agenda of the Forum is structured around topics such as competition and democracy, judicial perspectives of competition law, the main common challenges that judges face when applying competition law, challenges for small and developing agencies and policy and competition in public markets.
During the Forum the Chairwoman of the CC S. Ābrama was invited to present Latvia's experience in co-operation with other law enforcement and market surveillance authorities and how it helps to detect and prevent infringements of competition law.
S. Ābrama says: “Co-operation with other law enforcement authorities is essential for effective case investigations and for the prevention of infringements. Firstly, small authorities with limited resources require allies to help detect the most serious infringements, and secondly, it is also an absolute necessity if we want to create a small and effective public administration, which also includes rational use of public resources. By combining resources and knowledge, it is possible look at the problem from a variety of points of view and to find complex, effective and inter-institutional solutions.”
