The Competition Council (CC) of Latvia for the second time has been awarded 3-star rating in the annual ranking of the World’s top competition authorities, by the Global Competition Review (GCR). The factors contributing to the CC’s rating include a significant progress in the detection of competition infringements during the past year, as well as promotion of the competition culture in Latvia and improvement in internal processes.

About the work carried out by the CC, it has been mentioned, “that compared to the other Latvian institutions, the CC is “head and shoulders” above them in terms of professionalism, flexibility and approachability”. Overall observers agree that: “the competition authority does their best, given their limited financial and human resources.”

Skaidrīte Ābrama, Chairwoman of the CC, said; “We are proud to announce that GCR has once again awarded the CC with a 3-star rating. It is a recognition for my colleagues who with their high level of integrity, enthusiasm and professionalism have contributed to the development of competition culture in Latvia. Also it’s a strong signal to international investors regarding government commitment to ensure a fair competition environment in all sectors of national economy.”

The Rating Enforcement is the annual ranking on a scale of one to five of the world’s leading competition authorities that provides an extensive evaluation of their performance and how they compare with each other. Each year, GCR sends a detailed questionnaire to the competition authorities canvassing all aspects of enforcement. The data covers everything from the size of the authority to the average age and tenure of the staff, as well as the methodology for setting priorities and ensuring transparency, stability and procedural fairness.

The maximum rating is 5-stars, which has been given to the developed agencies of the world such as France’s Competition Authority, Germany’s Federal Cartel Office, Korea’s Fair Trade Commission, US Department of Justice Antitrust Division, and the US Federal Trade Commission.

Currently the competition authorities are in more than 140 countries around the world.
