​For the first time a court in Latvia decides to impose compensation of loss on a public body for a competition infringement

The Supreme Court of the Republic of Latvia decided that the Freeport of Riga Authority for engaging in commercial activity, thus infringing the public person law, and subsequent infringement of the Competition Law is obliged to compensate loss of the private company AS “PKL Flote”. The Freeport of Riga Authority is obliged to pay almost 1.35 million euros for the loss incurred by the company.

Latvian competition authority fines Lithuanian company UAB Vaizga for unnotified merger

On April, 2018, the Competition Council of Latvia (the CC) cleared the proposed acquisition of Latvian company SIA Petrol Property by UAB Vaizga. As the Lithuanian UAB Vaizga failed to submit merger notification before closing the transaction, the CC initiated a formal case investigation. The competition authority fined the Lithuanian company 57 419 EUR for unnotified merger.

Procurement organizers negligence facilitated bid-rigging by three amelioration sector companies

On 13 September the Competition Council of Latvia (the CC) adopted a decision finding three amelioration companies – SIA “LIMBAŽU MELIO”, SIA “Bauskas meliorācija” and SIA “Meliorācijas eksperts” – liable for bid-rigging in tenders financed partly from European structural and investment funds.
